Wordpress v2.8 Baker Released

Submitted by charlieaquino on Jun 11, 2009 – 6:13 pm2 Comments

wordpress-logo The much awaited release of Wordpress 2.8, dubbed as Wordpress Baker, is finally here! The announcement has been made in the Wordpress Development Blog posted June 11, 2009.

I immediately upgraded our site to v2.8 and I was amazed by the new features it possessed. There are two ones that I really liked and I third one that is great but not much of a use for me right now as I am pretty much settled on my theme for this site.

Here’s a roundup of the three nice features.

Improved Widgets Section

I love widgets and if you are familiar with the v2.7.1 interface you know how painful it is to update widgets. Select a widget area… add a widget… then save… and repeat for the next widget area. This is just so time consuming.

Wordpress Baker posts a new look at the widgets area that makes adding and removing widgets really easy and fast. You can even just deactivate a widget if you don’t want it and not lose your code in there.

Improved Editor

I love editing my CSS to suit the format that I want and honestly the editor in v2.7.1 was more just a notepad than an editor. The one I wanted was just a simple line number and it was not there. I use Firefox Firebug to check my CSS and normally it gives me the line number which I should edit to get the desired effect I want and that’s where I need my line numbers.

Now with Wordpress Baker, the line numbers are there. And add to that the editor give syntax highlighting that gives it the real feel of an editor.

Theme Selection

Them selection was a painful one for v2.7.1. You have to download a theme and upload it via FTP to your server before you can use it.

Now with Wordpress Baker you could add a theme from within the dashboard and you have a library of free themes to choose from much like the plug-ins section of v2.7.1. This is going to make the theme selection a lot easier? Or is it? Sometimes too many choices is not really a good thing. :-)

Here’s the full list of over 180 new features, changes, upgrades, and improvements on the Codex.

The Wordpress team also came up with a video that shows the new features of this latest release of Wordpress. Go watch it here…
