"I don’t like my job." "The cube walls are closing in." "I’m walking out of this job right now." "I need to get out of here!" You know you’ve thought it at one point or another, and suddenly, the life of a free-spirited, self-made freelancer sounds all the more appealing. Before you rush and type your resignation letter, there are a few things that you will have to consider. Pamela Slim, a former corporate manager turned entrepreneur and author of the book Escape From Cubicle Nation, weighs in with 10 important questions you need to ask yourself before you make the jump.

I wish there were a secret formula to ensure that the freelance business you have been madly working on is going to generate enough income to compensate for your current salary as an employee, if not much more. Unfortunately, there are many, many factors that go into determining business success.
To get some insight into your readiness to say goodbye to your day job, read over this checklist and see how prepared you feel.

1. Chest-Bursting Enthusiasm
In order to birth your business idea, you are going to have to have a tremendous amount of energy and stamina. When you are totally enthusiastic about an idea, you don’t have to worry about "staying motivated" or "dealing with procrastination," concerns voiced by many prospective entrepreneurs. Here are your enthusiasm checkpoints:
When you think about the work you do on a freelance basis, do you get a big smile on your face?
If you had your daily expenses taken care of, would you work on this business anyway because it is so exciting to you?
Do you see how this business fits into your overall life plan?
Would being successful in this business give you the kind of life you want? Would you be happy while doing it, not just once you were making money?

2. A Solid Business Case
Passion without a business model or viable market is a sure road to perdition. Business case checkpoints:
Have you prototyped and tested your idea with real people in your target market?
Do you have a viable business model? Could it survive if the market shifted?
Can you describe what makes you different, more effective or more appealing than your competitors?

3. An Eager Market That Has The Means To Buy What You Are Selling
You know that your business cannot serve everyone in the world. Who, exactly, do you want to serve? Do they have deep, important problems that your product or service will address? Market checkpoints:
Can you define your target market in clear and specific terms?
Do you know where they congregate in person, online, in associations or in the media?
Do they have access to cold, hard cash to pay your for your services?

4. A Money Plan
If you don’t manage the money side of your business, you are destined for misery. Financial checkpoints:
Are your personal finances organized and tracked in a systematic way?
Do you have 6-12 months of living expenses saved?
Do you have a solid plans B, C and D that you can activate if things don’t work out as planned? (Remember, they never do)

5. A Marketing Plan
You may know exactly who you want to work with, but if you can’t actually talk to them, how can you expect to make any sales? It may take a good, long while for you to build a relationship with mutual knowledge, respect and trust, so you must get started right away. Marketing checkpoints:
Have you chosen a marketing model and are you implementing it step by step? (Duct Tape Marketing, Action Plan Marketing and Michael Port are all great models)
Do you have a functional website that clearly nudges people to do what you want them to do? (sign up for your list, download your product, join your community)
Are you doing a handful of marketing activities consistently each month like writing articles, blogging, speaking, participating in online forums or inviting interesting people to lunch?

6. A Healthy Approach To Sales
I worked with salespeople for years and am convinced they are born with special (some say mutated) genes. Excellent, ethical salespeople are totally excited by the sales process. Most first-time entrepreneurs, on the other hand, feel like throwing up at the thought of asking prospects for money. Selling checkpoints:
Do you know what problem your product or service solves?
Do you know what your sales process is?
Do you lead your prospects through it or wait for them to take the lead?
Do you know how to ask for a sale?

7. Time To Create The Business
It takes time to get your business up and running. If you have to continue working as an employee while you develop your business, create a project plan and carve out time in your schedule to make steady progress. You may need to forgo activities that make you happy such as evening television, golfing weekends or excessive volunteering. Time checkpoints:
Do you have efficient processes in place for managing your email, tracking projects and accomplishing tasks?
Have you wiggled out of any non-essential obligations?
Do you know the major milestones you have to accomplish to get your business off the ground?

8. Support From Your Family
Starting a business is a very emotional experience, and you will need all the support you can muster from those closest to you. Family checkpoints:
Have you listened at length and without judgment to the concerns voiced by your spouse?
Do you have mutually-agreed upon metrics like amount of money in bank account, length of time to get business off the ground, amount of hair you are willing to lose before pulling the plug?
Have you clearly discussed the risks he or she will assume if you are married? (credit rating, co-signing for equipment or contracts, etc)

9. Support From Your Tribe
If you have grown up inside corporate environments, many of your friends may not be experts in entrepreneurship. You don’t need to know everything about your new business, but you should know people who do. Support checkpoints:
Do you have active networks on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter?
Do you have at least one mentor, mastermind buddy, staunch advocate, technical expert and friend at your fingertips?
Do you regularly and willingly help others, share information and provide resources without being asked and without expectation for reciprocation?

10. A Mixture Of Faith And Mistrust In The External Market And A Backup Plan
I have now lived through two significant upheavals in the financial markets as a business owner: Silicon Valley in 2000 and Phoenix, Arizona in 2008. What I learned by living through the busts is that nothing last forever (both the good and the bad). If your business success depends on the economy staying the same for the next 5 years, you are doomed to intense moments of panic and possible financial ruin. Market checkpoints:
Have you learned as much as you can about the market you are operating in?
Do you have a positive mindset and constructive thoughts about your new venture?
Are you willing and able to look on the bright side of the most stormy market condition, even if it means radically adjusting your plans?

To help you writing those first few cover letters, I will try to share with you how I write some of mine. I am not claiming that all my cover letters successfully drew the attention of the buyers I’ve applied to. In fact, I have had some job applications that were ignored, and I would just receive those dreaded updates saying that the buyer "Chose another provider." As someone also fairly new to Odesk, I have written many cover letters as I had to applied to many jobs. But we’ll focus on the quality of those ones I wrote for jobs that I got hired for.

Formal Vs. Casual

First thing you have to remember is that potential buyers vary greatly in how they communicate. If you will notice while you do your job searches, the details posted by buyers range from very professional, detailed instructions to the very informal, vaguely-written requirements. As such, you will definitely need to take note that very professional buyers will also expect the same level of professionalism from potential providers. If the buyer appears to be informal, you can be informal as well, writing your letter in a casual tone that may appeal more to him, but still remembering to be polite.

Communication is Key

Your cover letter will be a preview of how you can communicate with your buyer. Do not just check for spelling or grammatical errors. Be sure that everything you’ve written can be easily understood and makes good sense. Communication is extremely important when you work together, and you would want that what you have written will always convey your exact thoughts.

Be Relevant

If the buyer posted certain requirements or any questions in the job description, address all of those in your cover letter. This will give a good impression that you have certainly read through the buyer’s posted job and are serious about taking on this assignment. Highlight your work experience and expertise that are relevant for the project. There’s no need to list down everything you’ve done, just those which you think are the best and will showcase your skills.

Letting Your Personality Shine Through

Yes, you are your own person. You have spunk, you’re cool and funny. But you’re wondering if you should reflect this on your cover letter? I would say that, just to be safe, during the application process you remain conservative in your language, sound interested in the job but hold that overflowing excitement in check. You will have all the time in the world to let your personality shine through once you get hired. What you can allow to be seen though is your confidence that you can do the job well, that the buyer can trust and depend on you, and that you will do what more than what is needed to fulfill the buyer’s needs.

Short and Sweet

Except if you are the first applicant, your buyer will most likely be going through several applications. Respect the buyer’s time and make it short yet concise. You also wouldn’t want to bore the buyer with a lengthy cover letter, would you?

How The Buyer Will Contact You

Automatically, Odesk will provide the email address you are using in your account to your prospective buyer. Once you are invited for an interview, you may then provide the buyer with additional info on how to reach you. Remember that including your chat ID in the cover letter is against Odesk policies, partly to protect you from unscrupulous buyers and partly, I think, to protect them from providers and buyers going outside their system. So remember, only provide your Messenger ID or Skype ID once the buyer invites you to an interview.

As an example, you can find below an example of a cover letter. It is neither the best nor the perfect cover letter, that judgement is reserved for the buyer and will all be relative to the job at hand. You can use this as a guide if you are having difficulty in writing your first one. You can also use this for other work at home jobs you need to apply to. I encourage you to edit your letter each time you apply to a job, so that it will not be generic across the many cover letters you would have to write.

Good day!

I am very interested in writing articles for your project. I am a creative writer and I have been maintaining blogs for the past 10 years. I have written on various topics such as politics, women’s rights, fashion, gadgets, computers, and education. The following are links to blog sites that contain my articles:

www.upcominggadgets.com

I am confident that I can write interesting, thought-provoking articles for you and you can depend on me if there’s at all a need to edit any of them, until it is to your satisfaction.

Currently I am available to work with you from 1pm-12pm (GMT+8). I look forward to hear from you and I hope that we can establish a good, continuing work relationship.

Thank you for your time.

Pretty straightforward, the hourly jobs will pay you for every hour that you worked on the project according to your approved bid rate, and the Fixed-price will pay you the approved bid rate regardless of how many hours you worked.

oDesk guarantees payment for Hourly jobs only. So it would always be good to get the hourly jobs first. There are other requirements that goes along with that guarantee which we must take note of. As stated in the oDesk rules, their payment guarantee requires the following:

an Hourly assignment

a buyer with a Verified Payment Method

to be visibly working on an assignment-related activity

adequate memos describing your work

to stay within the assignment’s weekly limit (time over the weekly limit does not qualify)

an account in good standing with regards to oDesk policies and guidelines

You can see the “oDesk Verified Payment Method” stamped on top of a Buyer’s summary when you search for jobs. Another status that may be displayed here is “Payment Verification Not Verified”, which means that the Buyer has not yet setup a payment method in his account. The other is “Payment Method Verification in Progress”, which means that the Buyer has setup a payment method in his account but oDesk is still in the process of confirming the account. To minimize your risk, apply only to Buyers with oDesk Verified Payment seal. I only apply to Buyers with ongoing verification when I am confident that the Buyer is serious about the project.

Before applying to a Fixed-price job, carefully review a Buyer’s profile and check if he has a good history on fixed-price jobs. If you are confident that the Buyer is a legitimate buyer, that’s the only time I will recommend applying to one. Fixed-priced jobs can be a good way of getting that elusive first project, but you must also exercise caution.

As you build up your work hours, the luxury of choosing jobs and even declining job offers will be yours. Your hours and feedbacks on oDesk will attract potential Buyers and it is not unlikely that you will receive interviews initiated by the buyers themselves. Potentially, you have a great opportunity to build your professional career online simply by using oDesk.

Or perhaps you’ve already created a simple blog or website, but you know it just doesn’t look professional enough. There are effective solutions to these problems through outsourcing. The internet has opened up the global pool for technical talent that you can tap in to through the online work marketplace, Elance.com.

Elance has a huge database of skilled professionals to match up with your requirements for the work you need to get done. You can post a description of the project and allow for open bidding from talented professionals, or you can invite selected professionals to submit a proposal.

Elance is your one-stop complete solution for hiring experts, managing the work and paying for the results upon completion. Once a talented professional is found and business terms are agreed upon, milestones can be set within Elance to measure progress. Through Elance you’re able to communicate and collaborate with the contractor and review status reports to track the project through completion.

Milestones or whole projects can be pre-funded using the escrow service built into the system. This gives peace of mind to both the provider and the employer that payment is available and will be made once the milestone or job is completed to satisfaction. Once the job is completed, you have the ability to leave a feedback rating on six areas of the service providers’ performance.

If you need to get work done, for example building or improving a website, shopping cart integration, marketing copy written, search engine optimization, database programming, or a host of other tasks, then there really is no easier, safer and more complete solution than posting the job on Elance and letting an experienced professional take the stress and work out of your hands.

PayPal is one of the more popular ways of receiving your oDesk earnings, especially for non-US based Providers. There are other methods of receiving your oDesk earnings, but for me, Paypal works best. Your situation may be very different from mine, so I suggest that you still checkout the other payment methods that are available to you.

Signing up to a PayPal account is quick and easy. Once you have logged on to PayPal’s secure site, follow these steps:

Choose the PERSONAL account type (this is the free PayPal account, no monthly fees will be charged to you for this account)

Fill-up their form with your basic information. For your email address, use your personal email address and not your oDesk email address. You may link your oDesk email address later to your PayPal account once the account is created.

Once your PayPal account is created, PayPal will prompt you of the next steps through a To-do List box that will be shown on the homepage.

Your PayPal account verification happens in three (3) steps:

Step 1 – Confirm your email address.

Verify your PayPal account by clicking on the link that will be sent to you email address.

Step 2 – Add a credit or debit card to your account.

PayPal will require that you validate your account by linking to your other financial accounts. You may link either a credit card or a debit card. PayPal will charge a $1.95 fee to your credit card or debit card to validate your account, this amount will be automatically debited to your PayPal account once your financial account is validated (see next step).

Step 3 – Link and confirm your card.

To validate the credit card or debit card, you must get the 4-digit PayPal code from the transaction charged by PayPal. You can get this 4-digit code from your card billing statement, online statement, or via phone inquiry to your card’s customer service. After getting the code, log on to your PayPal account and enter the 4-digit code in the Verification screen (found in your To-do List)

For providers from the Philippines, I have only tried linking a credit card (HSBC and Bankard) to my PayPal account, but not a debit card. So I can only attest to those credit cards. I’ve read in some oDesk forums that there are debit cards that do not work well with PayPal verification. The debit card that works well is the Unionbank EON card, it has been tried and tested by some oDesk providers from the Philippines. But please do your research first before applying for a Unionbank EON card, I believe there is an annual fee involved.

I hope this helps! If I missed a step, just email me.

Godbless!

It takes time and persistence to succeed in this type of job but lucky for you it doesn’t take that long either. A couple of weeks or months perhaps.

I’d like to share with you some of the things that I did which I think helped me as I started in oDesk. Hope this will help you too!

Apply only to a Buyer who has an oDesk Verified Payment method seal. This means that oDesk has verified that the Buyer’s financial account is active and that the Buyer is ready to pay you once your work log is approved.

Apply only to hourly-paid jobs. This will ensure that you get paid for the work that you do, since oDesk has a payment-guarantee only for hourly-paid assignments and not for fixed-price assignments. If you are interested in applying to a fixed-price job, check out the Buyer’s Assignment History first. Check out if the Buyer has good feedback. It would be best if the Buyer has fixed-price jobs in his History and you can see the payments the Buyer made.

Apply to more recently posted jobs. You will increase your chances of getting an interview if you are among the first 5 candidates, or first 10 candidates, so that your profile will most likely be viewed by the Buyer as he goes down the list of Candidates. If you’re way down the list, your Buyer might already be interviewing or hiring someone in the front of the list.

Apply only to jobs that you are qualified for and have skills for. Provide samples of related work. If you’re applying for a writing job then attach a Word file with samples of articles you wrote, or provide a link to blogs you authored. If you’re applying as a graphic artist, attach a sample of your images or make sure that your portfolio contains work you’ve already done.

Write a good cover letter. Respond to the buyer’s questions and supply relevant information, this will ensure that your cover letter is not regarded as Spam or will not be perceived as a standard copy-and-paste application letter. Highlight not just your technical skills, but also your soft skills, your strengths. For example, you can say "I am extremely reliable, patient and hardworking." Make sure also to check your cover letter for spelling and grammatical errors.

In your cover letter, always provide your online messenger account where the Buyer can contact you. I suggest you start off with a Yahoo Messenger ID as most Buyers have this or can at least access this online.

Bid low on your initial projects. Some Buyers prefer oDesk Providers who have already worked certain hours, but they do make an exception for a skilled Provider who is affordable. It will certainly help you land your first job. As you start to build your reputation in oDesk and receive good feedbacks from Buyers, you can slowly increase your bids to new projects.

Try to be online most of the time to catch the recently posted jobs. If you have applied for jobs already and are just waiting for an interview invitation, and you really need to be offline, make sure you’ve set up your Yahoo Messenger to send messages to your mobile phone. There’s a Sign Out to Mobile option in the Yahoo Messenger client. This will ensure that you don’t miss any messages and you can even reply to Buyers thru your mobile phone.

I’m sure there are still a lot of tips you can try, these are just the basics but I’m confident that if you follow these you will not have a hard time. Enjoy and happy oDesking!

Getting started on oDesk is really very simple. Just follow this step-by-step guide to get yourself started.
Step 1 – Create an account
First off, you need to create an account as an oDesk Provider.

Just follow this step-by-step guide to get yourself started.

Step 1 – Create an account

First off, you need to create an account as an oDesk Provider.

Step 2 – Beef up your portfolio

After successfully creating your account, beef up you Portfolio. This is how you will introduce yourself to oDesk Buyers when you apply for a job, or what Buyers will see when they’re browsing through the Providers database in oDesk. Some of the things you need to fill up would be your basic info, educational info, skills – technical or otherwise, work history, portfolio, trainings and certifications.

Step 3 – Take the oDesk readiness test

Take the oDesk Readiness Test. All Providers are required to take this test before they can apply to jobs. This ensures that the Provider is familiar to the oDesk rules, policies and procedures. Don’t worry so much about this test, it’s a piece of cake and you can browse through oDesk’s Help Center while taking the test. I’m sure passing will be a breeze.

Step 4 – Install the oDesk Team applications

Download the oDesk Team for Windows or oDesk Team for Mac or oDesk Team for Linux/Unix. The oDesk Team is a client application (must be installed in your workstation) that will capture and log the work that you do for your Buyers. It captures random screen shots every 10 minutes while you work and allows you to post work memos that will be uploaded to the oDesk server, which your Buyer will review when it’s time to approve your work log. This is required for Hourly-paid jobs and optional for Fixed-priced jobs.

Step 5 – Set-up your payment account

Setup an online account where you can get paid by oDesk. Paypal is one of the most trusted and frequently used online payment facility. This is what I use to transfer my oDesk earnings to my local bank account (more details on a separate post, soon). Click here to create your Paypal account. You will be guided by Paypal as you create your account.

Step 6 – Apply for jobs

Start applying for jobs! Browse through the many jobs posted in oDesk and find something relevant to the skills and knowledge that you have.

Good luck!

I would like to share with all of you a recent discovery that allowed me to earn a living online.

I’ve always wondered if I can make a living out of doing things that I enjoy – like editing videos, layouting – those kind of stuff. Having been in my comfort zone – the corporate world – for almost 10 years (until I resigned last March), and receiving a comfortable salary consistently every month, it was difficult to take that risk.

But a couple of months ago, I decided to leave the corporate scene anyway. And in doing that, I was never actually confident that I will stumble into something that is also quite lucrative if you put your time and effort into it.

oDesk is an online marketplace where freelancers (called "Providers") get hired and companies or individuals (called "Buyers") hire people for their skills and services. I discovered oDesk through my fia nce who has a friend earning a living by merely blogging online. I haven’t had much of an online presence before this year, so I had no idea that there are people out there who actually pay you for that! And so, curiously, I visited oDesk to see what goes on there.

There is quite a number of jobs available through oDesk. These jobs cover various categories such as Web Development, Software Development, Networking and Information Systems, Graphic Design & Multimedia; and on the less technical side – Writing & Translation, Administrative Support, Customer Service, Sales & Marketing, and Business Services. There’s a piece of the pie for everyone.

I created an account as a Provider in oDesk last November, but only became an active member this April after I quit the corporate world. When I started to apply for my first job this April, I didn’t think I’d get hired for a job right away. But oDesk proved me wrong. On the very same day that I applied for a job, I got myself an interview. And when the oDesk Buyer and I chatted through Yahoo Messenger (yes, interviews are done just through chat, though there are a few Buyers who would need to discuss a job through a call via Skype), it didn’t take but an hour for me to get the job and get hired through oDesk. My first job was a video editing job, and until now, my Buyer and I continue to work together as he kept me in his oDesk Team. Since April, I have had a few Buyers in oDesk and I’ve earned enough to say that you can really make a living out of it. More importantly, I earned doing something that I really, really enjoy doing, and work from the comforts of my home or from any place I want to work like from my favorite coffee shop.

So I invite you, if you’re looking for a job, or you’re just looking to earn a little extra, try out oDesk. I’ll also be posting more information in this site to help those who are just starting to explore oDesk. I have a few friends converted who I need to share my learnings to, and I thought I might as well share this to all of you so that more people will benefit. A lot of information can also be found in the Help Center of oDesk, so have a visit when you find the time.

Hope this helps you. Godbless!
