The World of oDesk

odesk-get-hiredI would like to share with all of you a recent discovery that allowed me to earn a living online.

I’ve always wondered if I can make a living out of doing things that I enjoy – like editing videos, layouting – those kind of stuff.  Having been in my comfort zone – the corporate world – for almost 10 years (until I resigned last March), and receiving a comfortable salary consistently every month, it was difficult to take that risk.

But a couple of months ago, I decided to leave the corporate scene anyway.  And in doing that, I was never actually confident that I will stumble into something that is also quite lucrative if you put your time and effort into it.

oDesk is an online marketplace where freelancers (called "Providers") get hired and companies or individuals (called "Buyers") hire people for their skills and services.  I discovered oDesk through my fia nce who has a friend earning a living by merely blogging online.  I haven’t had much of an online presence before this year, so I had no idea that there are people out there who actually pay you for that!  And so, curiously, I visited oDesk to see what goes on there.

There is quite a number of jobs available through oDesk.  These jobs cover various categories such as Web Development, Software Development, Networking and Information Systems, Graphic Design & Multimedia; and on the less technical side – Writing & Translation, Administrative Support, Customer Service, Sales & Marketing, and Business Services.  There’s a piece of the pie for everyone.

I created an account as a Provider in oDesk last November, but only became an active member this April after I quit the corporate world.  When I started to apply for my first job this April, I didn’t think I’d get hired for a job right away.  But oDesk proved me wrong.  On the very same day that I applied for a job, I got myself an interview.  And when the oDesk Buyer and I chatted through Yahoo Messenger (yes, interviews are done just through chat, though there are a few Buyers who would need to discuss a job through a call via Skype), it didn’t take but an hour for me to get the job and get hired through oDesk.  My first job was a video editing job, and until now, my Buyer and I continue to work together as he kept me in his oDesk Team.  Since April, I have had a few Buyers in oDesk and I’ve earned enough to say that you can really make a living out of it.  More importantly, I earned doing something that I really, really enjoy doing, and work from the comforts of my home or from any place I want to work like from my favorite coffee shop.

So I invite you, if you’re looking for a job, or you’re just looking to earn a little extra, try out oDesk.  I’ll also be posting more information in this site to help those who are just starting to explore oDesk.  I have a few friends converted who I need to share my learnings to, and I thought I might as well share this to all of you so that more people will benefit.  A lot of information can also be found in the Help Center of oDesk, so have a visit when you find the time.

Hope this helps you. Godbless!
